COAST-SCAPES was presented at ASLO-SIL Joint Meeting 2026

COAST-SCAPES was presented at ASLO-SIL Joint Meeting 2026

In May, consortium members from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) attended the ASLO-SIL 2026 Joint Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The congress took place from the 12th until the 16th of May, bringing together scientists from freshwater and marine realms, as well as stakeholders, practitioners and policymakers, for a powerful exchange of methodological approaches and learning across scales.

Among the contributions to the conference, Eva Pavo Fernández, project manager of the COAST-SCAPES project, delivered a presentation on findings on coastal morphodynamics in data-scarce environments. Her oral presentation, “Assessing natural resilience: comparative analysis for storm-driven morphological changes in reflective and dissipative coastal profiles in a data-scarce region," was delivered on the 15th of May as part of a session titled “The Next Frontier in Aquatic Sciences: Linking Remote Sensing, Data Science, Modeling, and Open Science to Better Understand Aquatic Ecosystems.”

On the following day, Karinna Nunez, a research scientist from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and member of the COAST-SCAPES Regional Committee Board, presented complementary work linking advanced modeling techniques to adaptation planning. Her talk, "Leveraging Deep Learning Techniques and Cross-Scale Modeling to Inform Resilient River–Coast Adaptation Strategies," was held within the second installment of "The Next Frontier in Aquatic Sciences" session.

Both presentations underscore COAST-SCAPES’ contribution to advancing data-driven, cross-scale approaches for coastal resilience and reflect the value of the ASLO-SIL Joint Meeting as a venue for connecting freshwater and marine science communities around shared adaptation challenges.
